OLUYOMI ADEWALE MEMORIAL ACADEMY
WELCOME TO OUR
PARENTS' CORNER
Summer is the most vulnerable time of the year for kids, especially children living in low income neighborhoods, where drugs and gang related violence are prevalent. The risk of engaging in danger is therefore extremely high for students living in these neighborhoods. Many parents of inner city kids, however, wish to pave a path to the road of success for their students by exposing them to increased hours of academic engagement in math, reading, and science. Nevertheless,
the costs of tutoring programs are rapidly becoming out of reach for students who needs them the most, low income students. This plight is even more heartbreaking as some parents have witnessed their children succumb to the dangers present in their neighborhood; incarceration based on drugs or related offenses, initiation into gang related activity, and even death. The Oluyomi Adewale Memorial Academy, was created to ensure children of low income neighborhoods, who demonstrate a high academic need, are protected and not under-served.
After the long summer break, most students unfortunately suffer from learning loss, as they forget a large portion of what they learned during the school year. For low income students, they lose at least 2 months of reading instruction. Teachers are given specific curriculums aligned with grade levels, and often struggle between re-teaching lost information and remaining on
track to complete all elements of the curriculum. Unfortunately, students which demonstrated academic needs fall behind, due to the conglomeration of missing prerequisites, lack of
understanding, a fast paced curriculum, and confusion. We at the Oluyomi Adewale Memorial Academy tailor our instruction to assist students who may have fallen behind, and to guarantee students enter into their school year better prepared for the academic rigor ahead of them.
Rand Corporation, a nonprofit institution that helps improve policy and decision making through research and analysis, finds summer learning loss disproportionately affects poor students, who already begin school behind their more affluent classmates. Research further shows that any high-quality summer program that keeps children engaged – whether that is a traditional camp, summer school or even frequent trips to the museum – can mitigate summer learning loss.

The vision of Pastor Oluyomi Adewale is to see every child succeed in whatever careers they chose. Oluyomi Adewale Memorial Academy seeks to fulfil that mandate by teaching inner city kids mathematics, reading and science – preparing them for a life after school and closing the achievement gap.
As a parent, one of the greatest thins you can do for society is to invest in your child so that they become a positive influence in their environment. There ae several ways to invest in your child, one of which is through education.
To educate is to impart knowledge. Knowledge is power! Although it is commonly said, "What you don't know can't hurt you" this statement is false. The bible tells us that people perish because they lack knowledge.
We encourage you to make the decision to invest in your child's/children's education. This summer academy is a great step to take in making this investment.
